My dad has always had a funny obsession with baked beans. When I was growing up, he used to make the canned kind for us all the time as a side dish to pretty much anything and everything. He’d throw some baked beans on the side of hot dog, a steak, or just eat them alone straight out of the can. My father is an interesting guy, can you tell?!
Needless to say, I ended up being a fan of baked beans. However, I like to make my own at home, instead of eating the ready-made kind in a can. I use delicious ingredients like fresh onion and garlic, uncured bacon, and French’s Tomato Ketchup to make this recipe stand out! I feel good about using French’s products because they’re full of great flavor of U.S. farm-grown tomatoes, and free from high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial flavors & colors and gluten!
Making homemade baked beans from scratch does require a bit more effort than popping a can top, but trust me when I say it is absolutely worth the cooking time!
These homemade baked beans will pair perfectly with the homemade Sloppy Joe’s recipe I wrote recently. Or if you’re like my dad, you can eat these without a main dish!
Here’s how to make this delicious recipe:
Homemade Baked Beans Recipe
– 1 medium yellow onion
– 2 garlic cloves (minced)
– 8 oz bacon (chopped) – I used hickory smoked uncured Sunday bacon
– 3 tbsp butter
– (4) 15oz cans great northern beans
– 3 cups chicken broth
– 1 cup French’s Tomato Ketchup
– 1/3 cup brown sugar
– 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
– 1 tsp French’s Spicy Brown Mustard
– 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
– dash of salt
– 2 tsp smoked paprika
– 1 tsp maple syrup
First, add bacon, onions, and butter into a large pot over medium high heat. Cook until the onions begin to caramelize.
Next, add in ALL remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer.
Now, lower the heat and cover the pot. Allow this to cook on low for 3-4 hours.
The result is a richly flavored pot of the most amazing homemade baked beans you’ve ever tried. Yes, really
Serve along side your favorite BBQ dish and enjoy!
