This post about starting an organic backyard garden is sponsored by Harvest. As always, all opinions are my own.
As a mom to young kids, I try my best to feed them healthy foods to help them grow. We buy mainly organic and minimally processed foods for our family. We are lucky to live in a community where we can easily access farmer’s markets and locally sourced organic food for our family.
Recently, I decided to take it a step further and show our kids where some of our food comes from. I enlisted the help of my younger sister who has a seriously green thumb to help me build an organic garden in our backyard. She’s previously built a huge organic backyard garden that was featured in the Sun Sentinel (South Florida’s largest newspaper). She has the knowledge I needed to make my backyard garden a success.
Tips for Starting an Organic Backyard Garden
In order to grow healthy organic foods we wanted to use only the best soil and seeds for our organic garden. We went to Lowe’s and picked up 14 bags of Harvest organic soil. We bought a mix of all three of their products: Organic Garden Soil, Organic Potting Mix, and Organic Raised Bed Mix. Using quality soil ensures that the food we will harvest from our backyard garden will be top quality and free of chemicals.
Beyond just being good for our garden, Harvest is good for the earth! They’re the largest processor of yard and food waste in North America, managing to keep nearly 2,000,000 tons of waste from ending up in landfills. Pretty amazing, huh?!
By recycling these scraps, Harvest turns waste into organic gardening products that then feed the earth to, in turn, feed people to create a more sustainable planet. That’s amazing power of #TheHarvestEffect
We started our backyard garden by using a raised bed kit that we also picked up at Lowe’s. We mapped out where the garden would grow, put a weed barrier down, then put the garden walls together.
Next, we filled the garden with Harvest’s Organic Raised Bed Mix. Then, planted our sprouts and seeds. The seeds we used were sourced from a local Central Florida garden and seed store that carries only heirloom seeds grown without GMO’s or chemicals.
My kids really enjoyed this project and have loved watering our new garden every day since it’s been built. They ask each morning to go see how much our plants have grown (it’s really adorable!) and they’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of some organic vegetables in our garden.
It will be amazing to know that we built a garden from the ground up, and grew our own food to eat right in our own backyard. What’s even better is to know that it was grown in the best quality soil so I know I’m giving my family the best quality organic foods I possibly can!
