Back to School shopping can be a stressful time of the year for parents, am I right?! I remember back when I was a kid, I loved school shopping. Now, as an adult, not so much. With mile-long school supply lists (even in pre-k 4, who knew?!) and super crowded stores, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
The one thing that still stands out to me as a grown up, is that my Mom always made sure we had nice new sneakers for each new school year. It may sound silly, but it’s a tradition that I’ve made a point of carrying on with my boys. I want them to have new shoes to start each school year off “on the right foot” so to speak. So, we recently headed into Dick’s Sporting Goods to pick up some new kicks for everyone (me included – yippee!)
To make sure the boys were wearing shoes that fit their little feet properly, I asked a store associate for their best fit tips. As it turned out, the kids were actually currently wearing the wrong size shoes!
Here are 3 tips to get the best shoe fit for kids:
1. Measure their foot – Use the shoe guide in the store to measure your child’s foot to get an idea of their shoe size. In my experience, their actual size will vary by brand and shoe type, but this will at least give you a good idea of where their foot size falls on the chart.
2. Try on shoes with an everyday sock – Make sure your child tries on their new shoes with the type of socks they’ll be wearing with those particular shoes. The thin stocking type of try-on socks really won’t cut it when you’re trying on shoes and trying to get the best shoe fit for your kid. Bring along an everyday pair of socks, or buy some new ones in the store to go along with the new shoes.
3. Check where their toes are and rely on feedback -Be sure to check where your child’s toes are inside of the shoe. If your child is in between sizes, this can be a helpful determining factor of whether to size up or size down and find the best shoe fit. Also, always rely on feedback from the person that will be wearing the shoes – your kid! My son tried on a few that were his size, but didn’t like how they felt on his feet, so we kept searching until we had a Cinderella moment!
I’m super glad we went to Dick’s Sporting Goods for our back to school shoe shopping. They have such an amazing selection of back to school gear, and there’s really something for the whole family in there! Plus, I made my mama proud with some shiny new shoes for my babies. Today, I’m winning at parenting and shoe sizing. Tomorrow, well that’s another story, friends 🙂
